Description
The Alpine Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) is a nimble goat-antelope native to the rugged mountain ranges of Europe, including the Alps, Carpathians, and Balkans. Adapted to steep and rocky terrain, this agile animal sports a dense, water-resistant coat that helps it endure harsh alpine conditions.
Chamois hair is highly regarded in fly tying, particularly in the European Alps, where it has long been used for dry flies. Its fine, buoyant texture makes it an excellent material for imitating insect wings and bodies.
For more on using Chamois in fly tying, The Mission has written a small article on the subject.
